JAMES MADISON MEMORIAL PROJECT

James Madison
Portrait executed c. 1816 by John Vanderlyn (1775–1852).
Now part of the White House collection.

Attendees at the 4 March 2009 Program Meeting of the American Revolution Round Table of DC voted to support Tom Worsley's initiative to promote the creation of a prominent and well designed James Madison Memorial in Washington DC. The initiative being particularly significant as we approach the 225th commemoration of the American Constitution. .

At age 97, the indefatigable Tom Worsley drafted a full page memorandum providing compelling justification for erecting a Memorial to James Madison. Under cover of a letter, using the ARRT of DC letterhead, Dr. Worsley sent the memorandum to forty-three addressees, including the President, members of Congress, members of the Virginia Legislature, academicians, and others, soliciting their support to form a coalition that will "help activate Congress to promote and fund the Memorial."

The text of Dr. Tom Worsley's March 2009 letter is posted at following links: Proposed MADISON MEMORIAL PROJECT letter authored by Dr. Thomas B. Worsley

With sadness, it must be reported that Dr. Worsley passed away 17 May 2009 at Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington. His daughter, Diana, intends to carry her father's initiative forward. The ARRT of DC will maintain this announcement, and hope to report progress in support of the initiative launched by our late long time member, friend and former president.

229th Anniversary of
"The Crossing of the Dan"
20 February 2010, at South Boston, Virginia

In February 1781, one of the great 'retreats' [retrograde movements] in the American Revolution occurred with British and American armies racing across the Carolinas in a 230-mile chase to reach the Dan River. Executing a series of magnificent maneuvers, praised even by his enemies, General Nathanael Greene's "ragged and destitute American Army crossed the Dan River on waiting boats ahead of the British." The consequences of "The Race to the Dan" were monumental. Had Greene's army been defeated along the way, the results could have changed the subsequent events that led to the successful allied Yorktown Campaign of September-October 1781.
A re-enactment of "The Crossing of the Dan" is being planned in southern Virginia for winter of 2010. A tentative schedule of events can be viewed at: http://www.prizery.com/Crossing/Celebration.htm
